Veterans Day Parade November 11

"Keep the spirit of 1945 alive," is this year's theme for the Prescott Veterans Day Parade, which will take place in downtown Prescott, at 11 a.m., Nov. 11, 2015.

The parade will honor veterans of World War II, including Army Air Corps veteran John Pietz, now 90, who will serve as the parade's grand marshal.

Prior to the start of the parade will be an opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. in front of the Yavapai County Courthouse with comments from dignitaries, including Prescott Mayor Marlin Kuykendall, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Chancellor Frank Ayers, and will feature the posting of the colors and a performance of the National Anthem.

After beginning at 11 a.m., the parade will pause at 11:11 a.m. for a fly-over to commemorate the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918.

More than 80 entries have signed up for the parade, surpassing last year's tally of 72 entries. Last year, the parade included 72 entries, with participants from six categories, including non-profit organizations, fraternal organizations, motorized groups, music, marching units, and hospital entries by veterans.

A first-place trophy will be awarded in each category, and a "Super Hero Award" will be given to the best over-all.

"It is a great honor for the City of Prescott to participate in this important event honoring our country's finest heroes," said Mayor Marlin Kuykendall. "Paying tribute to the veterans who served on our behalf is the highest priority for our community.

Each entry will have a first and second palace winner with a first place trophy for Best overall; this will be our "Heroes at Home Award."

Special accommodations will be provided by the VA Medical Center for transportation and seating for those who need it. For those who cannot attend the parade, it will be broadcast locally on Prescott's Access 64 channel.
