The City of Prescott has released updated information including street closures for Acker Night, scheduled for Friday, December 8 from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. in the downtown area.
Streets will be closed as follows:
Beginning at roughly 3:30pm, Gurley St. will be closed from Cortez St to Montezuma St. Montezuma St. will be closed from Gurley St. to Goodwin Street. Streets will begin to reopen at approximately 9:00pm. All other streets in the downtown area will remain open.
According to Prescott Police Chief Debora Black, security measures will be similar to what was put in place during the Christmas Parade and Courthouse Lighting.
These include:
- Road closures will be supported with additional barricade equipment to prevent unauthorized vehicles entering the street closure area.
- Additional bicycle patrol officers will be assigned inside the event area to meet citizen’s call for service needs.
“We will continue with enhanced security measures for this important event,” said Chief Black. “Our number one priority is the ongoing safety of our citizens and visitors. Pedestrian safety is of particular concern on Acker night, and we remind everyone to be aware of the increased foot traffic and to follow all signals and signage.”
“Our department has received numerous calls and concerns that there was an actual threat during the Christmas Parade and Courthouse Lighting,” said Chief Black. “We want to emphatically state that this was not the case.”
Chief Black went on to stress that the enhanced measures are a new standard for large events in Prescott, and that they are not in response to any particular threat. “Events around the nation have led all of us in public safety to continually evaluate our safety and security measures.”
