Prescott Celebrates National Travel and Tourism Week

Tourism Office to host Open House May 7, from 2-4 p.m. at City Hall

The City of Prescott Tourism Office joins the rest of Arizona and the nation in celebrating National Tourism Week, May 5-11, 2019.

“In every pocket of America—from the largest cities to the smallest towns—travel matters,” said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow. “This National Travel and Tourism Week, we’re celebrating how travel powers our economies, strengthens our communities, and changes our lives.”

Prescott Mayor Greg Mengarelli said “We appreciate our tourism and hospitality industry in Prescott, including hotels, restaurants, retailers, museums and outdoor attractions like our trails and lakes.  All of these add up to make Prescott a great Arizona travel destination.”   In fact, Prescott was named “One of 19 Cities That Must Be Seen in 2019” by Expedia Viewfinder.

“Tourism has been strong in Prescott these past few years,” he said.  “Dollars come into our community to support the City’s general fund through sales tax, and bed tax dollars which support local organizations through event grants.”

In Prescott, bed tax dollars assist dozens of local non-profits and events.  For Fiscal Year 2019, over $250,000 will go back into the community in the form of grants supporting special events like the World’s Oldest Rodeo, the Bluegrass Festival, and the Courthouse Lighting.  Through the Tourism Advisory Committee (TAC) and Prescott Area Arts and Humanities Council (PAAHC) grants, 27 locally based non-profits received a total of $75,000 in supporting grant dollars this year.   Another $250,000 will go into public recreation improvements that citizens and visitors enjoy equally.

The Prescott Tourism Office will host an open house on Tuesday, May 7 from 2-4 p.m. at City Hall.  Tourism stakeholders and citizens are welcome to meet and greet the Tourism Office staff, and Tourism Advisory Committee (TAC) members, and learn more about Tourism’s impact in Prescott.  Refreshments will be provided.
