How Majority is calculated for the City of Prescott Mayoral and Council Race

The Prescott City Council election will take place on Tuesday, August 27.  This election will determine if there is a need for a general election on November 5.   The Prescott City Clerk is providing the following information for citizens to better understand how the majority is calculated in the City of Prescott.

How Majority is calculated for Mayoral Race

Majority is calculated in the mayoral race, by taking the total number of valid ballots cast (number provided by County Elections Office) in the election minus the following. This number is divided in half and 1 is added to determine majority:

1. Under Votes

2. Over Votes

3. In-valid Write-Ins

The reason for these deductions is as follows. Under votes and in-valid write-ins are deducted because the voter chose not to cast a valid ballot for Mayor. Over votes are deducted because we are unable to determine the intent of the voter.

How Majority is calculated for Council Race

Majority is calculated in the Council race by taking the total number of valid ballots cast (number provided by the County Elections Office) in the election minus the following. This number is divided in half and 1 is added to determine majority:

  1. Over Votes

The reason for this deduction is that the intent of the voter cannot be determined if more votes are made than the number of seats available to be elected. Under votes and in-valid write-ins are not deducted because raw numbers are provided by the County and cannot be calculated, therefore the ballot is considered valid.
