Halloween Safety
The Prescott Police Department would like to inform our community about safety during the upcoming Halloween activities this Thursday October 31st. We will have several street closures in order to provide increased safety for our community and we will be staffing two different locations in Prescott with additional officers on Halloween.
The always popular venue of Mt. Vernon Street will be completely closed to traffic from Haisley Road to Willis Street starting at 3:30pm on Thursday. This closure includes all cross streets that intersect with Mt. Vernon and these will remain closed until around midnight that night. We will also have a street closure on Country Club Drive between Park Avenue and Coronado Avenue with cross streets also closed in that area. Please plan ahead for any trips that you may have planned in these two areas as they will be hard closures with no vehicles allowed on either street during the closures.
Officers from our Traffic Safety Section, Motor Officers and our Community Service Section, Bicycle Officers, will be on duty at both locations to provide additional resources during the very busy times of Halloween. Our Department will also be participating in a DUI saturation patrol in an effort to keep our roadways safe from impaired drivers. We will have a mobile command post located on Goodwin Street at Mt. Vernon which will be staffed with police officers and our volunteer Citizen on Patrol officers. If you need assistance in that area please come by the command post.
Our concern this Halloween is
for the safety of the children and the safety of our
entire community. We want to remind everyone of some Halloween Safety Tips.
1. Walk safely – Please cross the street at corners using traffic signals or crosswalks. Always check both directions of the street looking for vehicles prior to crossing the street. Put your electronic devices away and keep your head up when you walk, not run, across the street. Always walk on sidewalks or paths and if there are none available then please walk as far to the left of the road as possible while facing traffic. Finally watch for cars that are turning or backing up.
2. Children under the age of 12 should trick or treat with an adult and should not be alone without adult supervision. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers. Have children carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see in the dark and to help drivers see them.
3. With the additional pedestrian traffic and vehicle traffic we ask all drivers to slow down and be especially alert in residential areas. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable was. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and curbs. Eliminate distractions inside your vehicle and turn on your headlights earlier than normal. The most popular trick or treating times are between 5:30pm and 9:30pm.
4. We ask that you please designate a sober driver for the evening. Too many tragedies have occurred on Halloween involving impaired drivers.
Thank you and we hope everyone has a safe and Happy Halloween!!!
