The City of Prescott is continually working to modernize and improve the facilities at the airport. A major part of funding for most aviation-related projects is the federal Airport Capital Improvement Program (ACIP). This program allows for federal funds to cover up to 90% of the total cost of all authorized projects. In some cases the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT Aeronautics Division) will contribute 5% towards eligible projects.

Recent Projects

  • Perimeter Road Improvements (Fall/Winter 2004)
The City constructed the runway incursion safety improvements (RIAT) which included enhancing lighting and signage as well as constructing two service roads around the ends of runway 30 and runway 3R. Funding Source: FAA, Arizona Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division and City of Prescott.
  • Runway Safety Areas & Infield Area Improvements (Spring 2005)
The City installed landing hold-short Operation (LASHO) signs and markings. The City also completed construction of the service roads and other RIAT safety related improvements. The Project also included required modification to runway hold markings to mitigate the potential for runway incursions as an incidental cost. Funding Source: FAA, Arizona Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division and City of Prescott.
  • Runway 12-30 Safety Area Improvements & Taxiways D & F Electrical Rehabilitation (Spring 2006)
The project included installation of a new technology LED taxiway edge light system, replacement of lighted signs, installation of LED flashing runway guard lights that warn pilots they are about to cross a runway and the replacement of two lighting control panels in the control tower and the electrical utility vault. Funding Source: FAA, Arizona Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division and City of Prescott.
  • Design & Construction of Airfield Fencing & Security Improvements (Winter 2006)
The City installed a new chain link fence and automatic gates which replaced the existing cattle fence and light duty gates that have been in place. The new fence and gates provide for better security for the airport as well as helping to insure that wildlife will remain off of the runways and taxiways. Funding Source: FAA, Arizona Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division and City of Prescott.
  • Terminal Expansion (Summer 2008)
The City constructed an expansion to the existing terminal facility through the installation of a double wide modular building to provide for the expanded TSA screening checkpoint and passenger boarding area. This expansion was completed as part of the initiation of service by Horizon Airlines from Prescott to LAX. Funding Source: Arizona Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division and City of Prescott.
  • Relocation of Rotating Beacon (Spring 2010)
The construction allowed for the relocation of a new beacon to replace the obsolete beacon from the residential areas that surrounds the southern portion of the Airport. This project also provided for an emergency power supply to runway 21R and associated taxiway A. Funding Source: Arizona Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division and City of Prescott.
  • Rehabilitate Taxiways (Fall 2010)
The City rehabilitated Taxiway C through crack sealing and providing a seal coat. The airport also installed enhanced taxiway centerline markings, Runway holding position markings, & surface painted hold position signs across the entire airport. Funding Source: FAA, Arizona Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division and City of Prescott.
  • Runway 21L/3R Runway Safety Area Improvements (Anticipated Winter/Spring/Summer 2012)
The City will be removing 400' of Runway 21L-3R from the 3R end and adding it to the 21L end to ensure a full 1000' Runway Safety Area at the 3R end. The project will also include shifting of Taxiway's C and D to match the relocated 21L Runway end, replacing 7000' of drainage ditch between Runway 21L-3R and Taxiway D, providing paved shoulders on Runway 21L-3R, reconstruction of failing pavement at the intersection of Runway 21L-3R & Runway 12-30 and at Taxiway E4, as well as replacing runway and taxiway directional signage at several locations. Funding Source: FAA, Arizona Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division and City of Prescott.
